Funded PhD Studentships

The University of Wolverhampton’s Centre for Art and Design Research and Experimentation (CADRE) is offering two full time PhD studentships. Bursaries are for three years at £13,500 per year with full tuition fee remittance. Bursary students will be expected to be working ‘in residence’ at the University of Wolverhampton. Fee remittance will be at the UK/EU rate, International students are welcome to apply but will need to fund the balance.


We are interested in PhD studentship proposals which are practice-led and theory-based. Potential students are encouraged to contact the following CADRE research supervisors.


Digital Technology Theory and Practice
We are interested in proposals that explore the moving image, film, video and animation, with reference to documentary, non-fiction animation, animation sound design and experimental film and video installation.

Art, Critique and Social Practice
We are interested in proposals that examine the relationship between critical theory and research based models of participatory, relational and post-relational practice, and proposals on critical theory, representation, and photography

Material and Theoretical Practice
We are interested in proposals that investigate theoretical, practical and creative issues in applied arts, crafts and design, such as the development of new concepts, the application of new technologies, orthe impact of objects on social interaction.

Applicants should be highly motivated with a Masters Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject. You can review the information about our research groups and areas of expertise amongst our research

Deadline for receipt of applications is 13th July 2012.
Interviews will be scheduled the week of 23rd July 2012, for admission on the 1st October 2012.


Applicants should send the following:
• A completed University of Wolverhampton studentship form
• A completed University of Wolverhampton PhD research proposal form (sections A1-B1, & B4 only need be completed. Section B1 must include: research questions, historic and contemporary research context and planned methodology.)
• An academic CV with letters of support from two academic referees
• Copies of qualifications
• Documentation of any practical work in CD, DVD or 35mm slides
• A stamped self-addressed envelope for the return of visual material.


International applicants only should also send:
• Copy of IELTS score
• Copy of visa (if available)
